The Fourth of July is my second favorite holiday (second only to Easter, I know I’m a little strange), and I am so so excited for it this year. I’m getting out of overly hot Denver and going to spend some time with one of my best friends out on a lake in Michigan.
One of Carrie and I’s favorite things to do is plan parties. We did it all the time in college in our sorority, we spend hours planning future weddings, it’s an addiction. So in honor of the upcoming holiday we thought we’d put together a gathering of ideas for a throwing a great sophisticated Fourth of July BBQ.
Set the Scene
Find a deck with a view.
Get festive with red, white and blue! I love how these simple mix and match patterns have great texture and really set the theme. Keep it classy kids, the fourth is one of those holidays that can get real gaudy real fast.
Turn on the tunes! I’d recommend some smooth guitar-y happy music like Jack Johnson.
Get Yourself Ready
Wear something cute and a festive.
Do a fun updo, and keep your bathing suit on. It’s hot out there!
Feed the Masses
I love pasta salad when it’s done right. Don’t grocery store it, this Pesto Orecchiette with Chicken Sausage looks delicious.
Skip the boring mixed greens and get straight to what everyone loves about salad, the fancy toppings. Try this Avocado and Almond Salad.
Roasted veggie kabobs, do something “different” like these Brussel Sprouts.
Grill out!!! Keep non-meat eaters in mind. These Sweet Potato Tahini Bean Burgers look awesome!
Wow everyone with a dessert, like a Coconut Cherry Tart.
Stock up on Otter Pops for the kids, and these Strawberry Peach Vodka Collins Pops for the grown ups.
When the Sun Goes Down
As the night cools off light a bon fire (be careful! check your area for fire bans!) and break out the marshmallows. If you’re lucky enough to have a guitar player in your mists, put ’em to work!
Light some sparklers and dance around!
Sit back and enjoy the show!
